How to Pack Your Suitcase?

How many times have we packed a suitcase where nothing fit of what we wanted to bring? How many times have we brought clothes that we never wore during the trip? When will we learn to pack precise and correct suitcases?

I’m going to show you how to pack a travel suitcase to leave calmly and, above all, LIGHT!

What Destination Have We Chosen?

The temperatures, the days, and whether or not we change locations frequently will determine whether you should choose a carry-on suitcase or a backpack.

Once decided, it’s important to consider the size of it. Keep in mind that for trips or destinations with summer weather, clothes take up much less space than winter clothes.

What Do We Want to Bring?

Make a list! Having everything in writing and in sight is much easier than running around looking for things. It is recommended to pack the suitcase calmly and, above all, in advance, so we always have time to buy what we lack or have forgotten.

By looking at the list, you can always review it; stop thinking about it for a while and then look again, and you’ll see how things are always missing or surplus. Once you are sure you’re not taking too much and everything is correct…. pack your suitcase!

Outfits for Each Travel Day

Packing a suitcase for travel

We usually bring extra clothes; the “just in case” items can overwhelm us and make us carry too many unnecessary things. The trick is to bring the clothes you normally wear.

The best trick of all is to assemble the outfit you’ll wear each day; you can even use some items for several days, like a pair of jeans.

How to Arrange Everything?

Organizing a suitcase

It’s the Tetris moment, and it’s crucial to know how to place things in the luggage.

We’ll put heavier and larger items at the bottom and finish with smaller items.

The things you’ll use the most, always place at the top of the suitcase. Remember to put shoes in individual bags, making sure the heels are with the toes.

Tip: You can fill the shoes with small items that fit, leaving more space in the rest of the luggage, such as underwear.

Wear the Bulkiest Items During the Trip

Wear the bulkiest items for travel

This point is especially relevant for the plane. If our destination is in the mountains, boots are usually very heavy, so it’s advisable to wear them and not carry them in the luggage.

We could also take the coat as an example. It’s always better to have a bit of free space in the luggage for any purchases that can be made at the destination.

If you’re also traveling with Low-Cost airlines, it’s advisable to wear everything that takes up the most space, as they will charge you for a 10 kg carry-on, €60, something to keep in mind when packing, and coats or bulky items are better worn but not overdone…

Luggage Organization

Especially if it’s a backpack, it’s advisable to put all the T-shirts together, all the cables or technology in general together, and all the underwear together. This way, we’ll always go straight to what we need without having to search from one corner to another in our suitcase. Packing organizers are great for this.

Consider Bringing Empty Bags

Clearly, it will be great for dirty clothes, also in case we have wet clothes one day, we can keep them separate from everything else. But it will also be the key for those occasions when there’s no room for more items in the luggage; we can use a bag as an extra.

Liquids and Electronic Devices

Individual containers with a capacity not exceeding 100 ml for travel

Liquids, perfumes, creams, aerosols, foams, gels, shampoo, and toothpaste, in individual containers with a capacity not exceeding 100 ml. within a transparent plastic bag, approximately 20 x 20 cm, with a capacity not exceeding 1 liter. Only one bag per passenger is allowed, including children. The bag will be placed in the security control trays, separate from luggage.

In addition to these liquids, you can carry medications with their prescription needed during the flight or food for children.

Electronic devices in hand luggage passing passport control

All electronic devices must always be carried in hand luggage, never checked. You can carry laptops, mobiles, and tablets, as well as external batteries and hard drives; these must be shown separately and outside their cases on the security trays.

And if you arrive at the hotel before check-in time, no worries. Here’s the solution. Also, if you want to make the most of the remaining hours at your destination and they require you to leave the hotel with no luggage storage, keep reading for the answer to this question: Where to leave your luggage?

Required Documentation and What to Carry

Passport with stamps

This must always be with you. It’s advisable to carry a copy of these documents or take a photo on your mobile. I personally recommend uploading copies of these documents to the cloud for access from any computer in case of theft.

Considering Transportation

Plane with penguins

Airplanes can be cold, sometimes very cold, and many do not provide blankets. For these cases, it’s best to always have a thin jacket with you. Think that this jacket can save you from a chilly night or even transportation at your destination.

A good practice is to have a change of clothes in your hand luggage. If your suitcase happens to be lost, you can resort to these clothes while waiting for your misplaced suitcase to be delivered.

It’s so cold on airplanes because the lower the temperature, the lower the likelihood of passengers fainting. You’ll also feel colder if you’re seated by the window or in the front of the plane, so choose your seat wisely. The advice is to dress warmly because a warm cabin is impossible.

Where to Leave Your Luggage?

How many times have you had to leave your accommodation when there were still hours before catching the plane or the return train and had to carry your luggage during that time? Maybe none, but this is something that can happen at any time.

That’s why I want you to know that there’s a very interesting option: the possibility of using LOCKERS to leave your luggage while traveling. This way, you can make the most of those hours and continue enjoying the city you’re in.

Sometimes the hotel itself will allow you to leave your luggage in a storage room they have while you wait for your departure time, but not all hotels offer this service.

Lockers Around the World

LUGGAGE HERO: This company has lockers in many cities around the world. They are usually in hotels, certified stores, or cafes. You can reserve online to ensure there will be space at your chosen location, saving you time once you’re on your trip.

The price for leaving them is €1 per hour and suitcase with a maximum of €5 per day. If you make a reservation but do not show up, you won’t be charged anything. It’s very simple, enter the destination, date, and number of suitcases you’re leaving, a map and a list of all locations will appear.

Select the one that suits you best, and once you enter your email, your reservation is confirmed. When you arrive at the storage, access the confirmation email and activate the timer on the reservation page. You’ll be given a security seal to put on each suitcase.

It’s necessary for the insurance coverage, and when you come back for your luggage, stop the timer on the reservation page. Show the pickup confirmation and pay for the number of hours you used.

Hand Luggage Dimensions

You know what you can carry in your suitcase when you have to take a flight… well, I’ll explain it here.

45 x 36 x 20 small suitcase

The dimensions of the carry-on suitcase depend on the airline and the chosen fare. In general, the maximum size is usually 55 x 40 x 23 cm, although some companies allow smaller suitcases of 45 x 36 x 20 cm. The maximum weight also varies, from 8 kg to 15 kg. Additionally, the carry-on must fit in the overhead compartment.

Most airlines allow, in addition to a small bag, a 10 kg carry-on suitcase that does not exceed the following dimensions. Therefore, if you travel with low-cost airlines like Ryanair, you should choose this suitcase model, which is the smallest of carry-on suitcases.

Aerolite 56x45x25Hard Cabin Suitcase with 4 Wheels Carry-On, Maximum Size for EasyJet, British Airways, and Jet2, 56cm, 5-Year Warranty.

I always bring the largest possible backpack within the allowed measurements in case something doesn’t fit in the suitcase and also to carry the laptop. However, if you don’t want to check in, the best option is to bring a carry-on suitcase that is allowed on any airline, like the one I recommend, and the one I bought back in the day and has covered quite a few miles.

Remember that if you travel only with carry-on, you cannot exceed 100ml in liquid products, and each bottle can be a maximum of 100ml. Additionally, all products must be in the same transparent bag and at the top of the suitcase.

If, on the other hand, you need a lightweight, sturdy suitcase with plenty of capacity at an unbeatable price from the AMERICAN TOURISTER brand, this is the best-selling one on Amazon.
