Gili Islands or Nusa Penida

The Gili Islands are an archipelago of three small islands—Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air—located off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia. These islands are a common destination for tourists seeking the experience of visiting a remote island.

Which Gili Island to Visit?

Overall, Gili Trawangan tends to be a bit more expensive than Gili Meno and Gili Air due to its greater development and popularity. Gili Meno and Gili Air offer more economical options in terms of accommodation and food.

So, deciding between one or the other will depend on what you are looking for. The good thing is that being quite close to Bali, you can easily visit the others. Here, you will find a super relaxed atmosphere, turquoise waters, and white sandy beaches. Swimming with turtles, snorkeling with colorful fish, indulging in fresh mahi-mahi (fish), and relaxing while watching sunset views are the most popular activities.

What is the Currency of Indonesia?

Exchange Money drawing

The Balinese rupiah is the national currency (IDR). I recommend always carrying around €90 in cash in case of any issues with cards or the network. It’s better to pay with small bills because many times vendors don’t have change for 50,000 IDR or higher bills.

It’s important to know that prices under 50Rp are very rare, which means that instead of returning change, merchants often pay with candies or similar substitutes.

If you want to take some money from home, I recommend exchanging currency with RIA as they offer the best commission-free exchange rate and send and collect the currency at your own home.

Best Time to Travel to Indonesia

Weather Drawing

Indonesia has a temperature range of 20°C to 33°C throughout the year. Indonesia is divided into two seasons: the rainy season, from late October to April, and the dry season, from mid-April to September.

In summary, the best time to travel to the Gili Islands in terms of weather is usually during the dry season, spanning from April to October. During this period, the weather is generally warmer and drier, making it an ideal time to enjoy beaches and outdoor activities.

Spring Drawing

April to June: These months are generally pleasant, with warm temperatures and less rainfall. It’s a good time to visit the Gili Islands before the peak tourist season arrives.

Verano dibujo July to September: These months mark the high season in Indonesia, including the Gili Islands. The weather is warm and dry, with plenty of sunshine, making it a popular time for tourists looking to enjoy the beach, scuba diving, snorkeling, and other water activities.

Otoño dibujo October: Although technically part of the dry season, October may experience some occasional rains. However, the rains are usually less frequent and do not significantly impact the visit.

Invierno dibujo November to March: During this wet season, the Gili Islands may experience heavy rains and rough seas, often limiting water activities. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid these months if you plan to fully enjoy the beaches and water activities.

In summary, the best time to travel to the Gili Islands is during the dry season, especially from April to October, when the weather is warmer, and there is less rain.

White sand beach

The best deals are found during the monsoon season, although I advise traveling during the dry season, especially in April, May, and late September. This way, you can avoid the rains and experience much less humidity. Plus, you can enjoy some delicious mojitos, like the ones we had.

The best time of year to travel to the Gili Islands and Nusa Penida depends on individual preferences, but I recommend traveling during the dry season. The period with less rainfall in Bali is from April to late September. In any case, traveling during the rainy season is not a crazy idea either, as the rains are usually sudden storms that only last a few hours.

Furthermore, during these months, you can escape the large crowds and visit the islands with much more tranquility. I should add that prices are less inflated during the wet season. However, if you travel during the monsoon season, you need to be extra careful with mosquitoes, as their population increases.

What are the plugs like in Bali, Indonesia?

Plug drawing

In most Bali resorts, the voltage is 230V. However, there are still many places that operate on 110V, so we advise bringing a transformer depending on the area. The plugs have two cylindrical prongs, similar to those in Europe.

  • Voltage: 230 V
  • Frequency: 50 Hz
  • Plugs: Type C / F
Las clavijas a utilizar En Indonesia son del tipo C

Las clavijas a utilizar En Indonesia son del tipo F

In Indonesia, the common voltage is 230 V. The frequency is 50 Hz. The plugs and sockets are Type C / F. In the following images, you can see the types of plugs and power sockets.

If you need to purchase a  Travel Adapter, I personally buy power plug adapters on Amazon, where you will find a wide selection. Click directly on the link to buy yours.

The need for a power plug adapter also depends on the country you live in. For more information on plugs from any part of the world, you can visit the  Plugs of the World website.

What is healthcare like in Indonesia?

Nurse drawing

Vaccination is not mandatory to travel to Indonesia. People coming from South America and Africa must show that they have been vaccinated against yellow fever.

Mosquitoes, it’s important to carry mosquito repellent with DEET. They can transmit dengue, especially during the rainy season, which could be a serious health problem. Stomach and digestive issues can also arise; to avoid diarrhea, it’s better to drink bottled water, never tap water or water in hotels. In the case of ice, it often comes from filtered water, so if it has a uniform shape, it’s quite safe.

As advice, don’t eat raw foods, unpeeled fruits, and don’t drink any liquid that is not industrially packaged. Although pharmacies are easy to find, they are not as well-stocked as in Europe, so we recommend bringing some basic medications from your country. To make sure you don’t forget any important medication you should bring, visit the post on Organizing Your Luggage.

What visa do I need to travel to Indonesia?

Passport and visa drawing

To enter Indonesia, every tourist must present a passport with more than 6 months of validity. Additionally, citizens of over 60 countries have the option to acquire a visa by paying the fees in cash upon arrival at Bali airport, and it’s advisable to pay the exact amount requested.

The visa will be valid for 30 days and can be renewed if desired. Another convenient and simple way is to process the visa from this website, which will handle all visa procedures in exchange for a small commission, saving you a lot of time and headaches.

In the case of Spain, Spanish citizens can enter the island without a visa for a maximum of 30 days, and no extension is allowed upon entering without a visa. This regulatory change is very recent, so if you have doubts, it is best to contact the Embassy of Indonesia in Spain, located in Madrid.

Documentation for other countries: Currently, there are countries that do not require a visa to access Indonesia. It is best to contact the Embassy of Indonesia in your country and request information about the necessary requirements for traveling to Indonesia.

How to go from Bali to the Gili Islands?

Barco dibujo

To get from Bali to the Gili Islands, the most common way is by boats departing from the port of Padang Bai. Here is information about schedules, approximate prices, and duration of the journey so you can plan your trip:

Fast boats are a popular option for traveling from Bali to the Gili Islands due to their speed and comfort. Travel time varies depending on sea conditions but generally ranges between 1.5 and 2.5 hours. If you want to book in advance, you can do so directly here with CIVITATIS from this link book a fast boat from the port of Padang Bai or Serangan or another.

Prices for fast boats may vary depending on the company and type of service. Generally, prices range from IDR 300,000 to IDR 600,000 ($20 to $40 USD) per trip, depending on the operator and amenities offered.

Fast boats usually have regular departures from the port of Padang Bai to the Gili Islands. Schedules may vary depending on the season, so it is advisable to check updated schedules with boat companies.

That’s why, unless you plan to spend a considerable number of days in Bali, I advise you to take this FAST FERRY directly as it is the cheapest you will find or the one from CIVITATIS that I mentioned earlier.

Schedule of public ferries between the Gili Islands

If you are going to buy it in advance here you can see schedules and prices.

Note: It is advisable to book your tickets in advance, especially during the high season, as boats can fill up quickly. Also, keep in mind that schedules and prices may change, so it is best to verify updated information with boat companies or through reliable travel agencies. There at the port, they divide you by islands, with your sticker clearly visible, and so you don’t “freak out,” know that your luggage leaves before you on other boats, so keep valuables with you just in case.

Gili Islands Map

Public Ferries are a more economical option for traveling to the Gili Islands from Bali. These ferries are usually larger and slower than fast boats, with scheduled and regular departures from the Padang Bai port to the Gili Islands. It’s essential to check the schedules before planning your trip, as they may have less frequency than fast boats. Public Ferry prices are usually more budget-friendly compared to fast boats, ranging from IDR 50,000 to IDR 150,000 (approximately $3 to $10 USD) per trip, depending on the company and service type.

The downside to this option, besides practically wasting a day of vacation, is that the Lembar port is not well-connected to Bangsal (nor to Teluk Nara or Senggigi).

Gili Air

Gili Air has a special energy, perhaps due to its relaxed atmosphere or the incredible paradise that surrounds it, making it seem as if time stands still on the island.

The island of Gili Air has the most hippie atmosphere, very laid-back and pleasant. Despite its small size of only 15 square kilometers, there are many fun activities to do in Gili Air, and I recommend trying them all during your visit.

The streets of Gili Air are not paved, there are no roads, and motor vehicles are prohibited. There are few shops, and at night, the lighting is simple. Since there are no rivers and no means to collect rainwater, it is brought in daily in barrels, like everything else entering the island.

You’ll find a quiet, underdeveloped island with hotels offering rest and basic leisure services for you to enjoy. I won’t say more… 😉

Relaxing and Enjoying a Beautiful Sunset: Watching the sunset, relaxed at one of the beach bars on the west side of the island, is an unforgettable experience. Witnessing the sunset with Trawangan and Bali in the background is simply marvelous, as is swinging on one of its swings.

Transportation in the Gili Islands

Mountain bike

Bicycle rental is a convenient and popular option in the Gili Islands, especially on Gili Trawangan, where the island is larger, and there are more paths to explore. You can rent bicycles at various rental shops located on the islands.

Another option is to explore the islands on foot. The Gili Islands are not too large and can be easily explored on foot. This will allow you to enjoy the surroundings and explore every corner at your own pace.

Carreta

Remember that the Gili Islands are known for their calm and relaxed atmosphere, so you won’t find much traffic or motorized transportation. Most journeys are short and can be done on foot or by bike. Enjoy the experience of moving around without motorized vehicles and take advantage of the natural beauty of the Gili Islands!

Upon arrival on the island with your boat, you’ll find horse-drawn carts. Hotels are scattered across the island, beachfront, most of them close to the pier. If you’ve booked in one of them and don’t have much luggage, you can walk to your accommodation in no more than 15 minutes. If you’re staying on the other side of the island, you’ll need to take the cart unless you prefer to walk with your luggage for at least half an hour.

Snorkeling in the Gili Islands

First and foremost, swim, dive, relax, read a good book, and snorkel because, as mentioned earlier, right at the beach, as soon as you enter the water, you can see lots of little fish and corals. You can also book snorkeling tours to see turtles or sharks. Some advertise that they refund the tour cost if you don’t see any… 😉

The Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air, are renowned for their abundant marine life and transparent waters, offering an unforgettable experience for snorkel enthusiasts.

Tropical corals

As you don your snorkel mask and tube, you’ll submerge into an ocean teeming with colorful corals, tropical fish, and, of course, the impressive sea turtles that call these islands home. While floating over vibrant coral gardens, sea turtles emerge gracefully, swimming elegantly around you. Their peaceful presence and grace will captivate you, providing a special connection with marine nature.

Swimming with Sea Turtles

There are numerous boat excursions for snorkeling, and I think it would be unforgivable to leave Gili Air without joining one. You can rent all the snorkeling equipment at almost any point on the beach without any problem! You have no excuse!

In my case, I booked a tour with a guide who knew roughly where they are, and I did it through our accommodation in Gili Air, and it cost us 100,000 rupiahs (€6). The tour departs at 10 in the morning, makes several stops, takes you to Gili Meno for lunch, and you return around 4 in the afternoon.

Green Sea Turtle

They took us to an area called Turtle Point where you can see giant turtles where we could swim within a meter of them. It was a wonderful experience, with more than 20 turtles, both on the seafloor and on the surface when they come up to breathe.

Undoubtedly, another moment in the dive was the submerged sculptures by Jason de Caires Taylor, which are a very famous image on Instagram, although from my point of view, it cannot be compared to the incredible experience of swimming with giant sea turtles by your side.

Diving in the Gili Islands

Several hotels in Gili Air offer diving courses from the basic to the most comprehensive and organize outings several times a day, even at night. Additionally, most of them have a saltwater pool for baptisms and the first contact with the equipment before heading into the sea. All the Gili Islands have diving schools.

Whether you have certification or want to get it, scuba diving is one of the main things to do in the Gili Islands. If it’s your first time, they will give you basic notions at the school, and you’ll have a few hours of training in the pool before diving into the sea. I did it, and it was a wonderful experience!

As you glide through the warm and calm waters, sea turtles will delight you with their graceful movements and curiosity. Observe them feeding on algae or simply enjoy their mere presence in their natural environment. Don’t forget to respect their space and follow responsible diving and snorkeling guidelines to ensure the conservation of this unique ecosystem.

Best Accommodations in Gili Air

The island is very tiny; you can walk around it in less than 1 hour, and there’s no bad area to stay because the whole island is a paradise.

Just be aware in advance that there’s no better area than another. I might suggest avoiding the right side, where most of the restaurants are concentrated, although it’s true that it has the best beach on the island. If you want a hotel focused on the sunset, then it’s ideal to choose the right side. The north of the island is the wildest area.

If you’ve decided to visit Gili Air, this is the island I recommend and ultimately visited, so if there are available rooms in any of the following accommodations, don’t think twice:

Gili Islands Swings

COLUMPIO DIBUJO

Lying on the beach sunbathing is surely one of the reasons you’ve come to Gili, and in my opinion, the best beaches on Gili Air are on the west side.

They are the widest, regardless of the high tide, as you can also capture photos of the swings in the water of Gili Air, another attraction of the island, located on the beaches overlooking the sunset, in this case, throughout the northwest and southwest area of the island, as well as on the other two islands.

In the idyllic island of Gili Air, you will discover a unique and charming attraction, the famous swings in the sea. These wooden swings are strategically located on the white sandy beaches, creating a dreamlike setting for visitors.

The swings offer a truly magical experience, allowing you to gently sway over the crystal-clear water and immerse yourself in an atmosphere of relaxation and serenity. As you swing gently, you can delight in panoramic views of the horizon, the blue ocean, and the natural beauty surrounding the island.

These swings provide a perfect opportunity to capture stunning photographs and create unforgettable memories. You can take advantage of the picturesque charm of the swings to capture captivating images with the turquoise sea as a backdrop.

Sunset in Gili Islands

Whether you decide to enjoy a moment of tranquility, take spectacular photos, or simply add a touch of fun to your visit to Gili Air, the swings in the sea are an experience you won’t want to miss. Let yourself be enchanted by the magic of these swings and enjoy the natural beauty of Gili Air in a unique and special way.

Hospitals in Gili Islands

Hospital Drawing

There are no hospitals in the Gili Islands, although there are primary care centers that usually open 24 hours a day and are accustomed to attending to tourists. For typical problems such as diarrhea, sunstroke, bites, cuts, etc., they can assist you directly, although for more severe cases, you may need to be transferred to Lombok.

In any case, I recommend having a good Cheap Travel Insurance that covers you if you need to be transferred to the hospital in Lombok.

Beach Landscape

Beaches of Gili Air

Gili Air is known for its dreamy beaches, offering a peaceful and relaxing environment for visitors. Here are some of the standout beaches of Gili Air:

Main Beach

Island Drawing

This is the largest and most popular beach on Gili Air. With its soft white sand and turquoise waters, it’s perfect for relaxing, sunbathing, and enjoying breathtaking sea views. You’ll also find several restaurants and beach bars where you can enjoy a meal or refreshing drink while relaxing.

Gili Beach

Sunrise Beach

island drawing

As the name suggests, this beach is famous for its beautiful sunrise views. It’s an ideal spot for early risers who want to enjoy a stunning natural spectacle while relaxing on the beach. Sunrise Beach is also quieter and less crowded compared to the main beach, making it a perfect place to experience the serenity of Gili Air.

Coral Beach

island drawing

Located on the west side of the island, Coral Beach offers a unique combination of white sand and colorful corals. It’s an ideal spot for snorkeling, as you’ll find a variety of marine life and colorful coral reefs right at the shore. Exploring the underwater world off Coral Beach is an unforgettable experience.

Gili Air Beach

Pool Beach

This beach gets its name from the natural pools formed during low tides. When the tide recedes, small shallow pools are created on the beach, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip in calm and clear waters. Pool Beach is perfect for relaxing and taking a dip in a natural setting.

Gili Air Island Beach

These are just a few of the beautiful beaches you’ll find on Gili Air. Each has its charm and offers a unique experience. Explore these beaches, dive into their crystal-clear waters, and enjoy the tranquility and natural beauty of Gili Air.

Nusa Penida

island drawing

Nusa Penida is a paradise island that offers travelers a natural and wild experience. Here, you’ll find stunning coastal landscapes with white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and steep cliffs. The island is surrounded by coral reefs, making it a haven for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts.

In addition to the beaches and vibrant underwater world, Nusa Penida features unique attractions such as spectacular rock formations, hidden waterfalls, natural pools, and jungle trails.

The island’s tranquil and laid-back atmosphere, combined with its pristine natural beauty, makes it an ideal place to disconnect and enjoy serenity. However, keep in mind that Nusa Penida still retains its rustic charm and is not as developed as other tourist areas in Indonesia, adding a touch of adventure to your journey.

How to Get to Nusa Penida?

Ferry drawings

Nusa Penida is only a 45-minute ferry ride from Bali. There are many tour operators selling fast ferry tickets between the two, departing several times every morning and returning at various afternoon hours.

If you have limited time, you can visit Nusa Penida in just one day from Bali. I would suggest taking the early ferry (around 8:00 am) from Sanur and returning around sunset. A day trip to Nusa Penida is enough time to get a glimpse of each of these places; however, if you have more time, two nights on Nusa Penida would be ideal.

Book the excursion to the Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan islands by clicking on the following link GETYOURGUIDE.

How to Get Around Nusa Penida?

Getting around Nusa Penida is quite straightforward as the island is not too large to navigate on your own. Expect to pay more than you would in Bali for a scooter; around 70,000 rupiahs per day.

Diamond Beach

Island drawing

Diamond Beach is the crown jewel on this Bali island. What was once an inaccessible beach at the base of a spectacular cliff is now reachable thanks to ingenious locals who have built stairs leading down to the beach.

These stairs are steep, and you’ll need to use a couple of ropes to reach the beach safely. The beach is best enjoyed in the morning and until the afternoon, as the sun will eventually disappear behind the cliff.

Kelingking Beach

Island drawing

This is one of the most famous beaches in Nusa Penida, known for its distinctive dinosaur-shaped rock formation. From the viewpoint, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the beach and the sea.

The view of the beach has given Kelingking the nickname “T-Rex,” and from the top of the viewpoint, you’ll soon see why. If you have time to hike down to the beach, it’s undoubtedly one of the most beautiful beaches in Indonesia!

Nusa Penida

The spectacular cliff edge is lined with a schematic but safe staircase. Make sure to wear closed shoes if given the option. The staircase is lined with a bamboo railing that adds to the thrill of the descent. Another advantage is considering how remote the beach is. You can enjoy one of the most beautiful beaches you’ve been to without the crowds!

Broken Beach (Pasih Uug)

Island drawing

It’s an impressive natural formation where an opening in the cliffs creates a circular lagoon connected to the sea. The crystal-clear water and rugged landscape make this place very picturesque.

Bay Beach

isla dibujito

It is a beautiful white sandy beach with crystal-clear waters, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxation. It is also a great spot for snorkeling to discover Nusa Penida’s rich marine life.

A picturesque and secluded beach with stunning cliffs, turquoise waters, and a stretch of white sand. To reach the beach, you’ll need to walk along a steep trail, but the panoramic views are worth it.

Peguyangan Waterfall

It’s not a traditional waterfall but a set of blue stairs embedded in the cliff leading to a sacred spring on the coast. The hike can be challenging, but the views along the way are spectacular.

Beach and Forest

isla dibujito

Located at the western end of the island, it offers a combination of beach and jungle. You can enjoy a dip in the natural freshwater pool and explore the trails through the surrounding forest.

A Thousand Islands – Pulau Seribu

This is another famous viewpoint on Nusa Penida. This also means it’s one of the most Instagrammed spots on the island. To reach this viewpoint, you first need to head to the parking lot. Then, walk for about 20 minutes to the Tree House that has made Nusa Penida quite famous.

Todo para ver en Nusa Penida | MUNDO DE WANDERLUST

You can book a room here to spend the night (it’s incredibly popular, so make sure to do it in advance). Or you can pay around $5 for five minutes to take a photo. There are many more wonderful things to do on the island of Nusa Penida if you have more time. As time goes on, this island will become increasingly developed and accessible.

Billabong

isla dibujito

Located near Broken Beach and it’s a natural pool formed by ocean waves crashing against the rocks. At certain times, the water becomes calm and crystal clear, allowing you to swim and enjoy the surroundings.

These are just some of the highlighted attractions in Nusa Penida. The island also offers many other stunning beaches, cliffs, caves, and diving spots. Keep in mind that some areas may be challenging to access or require hikes, so it’s recommended to hire a local guide or take a tour to fully explore the island.

Nusa Lembongan

isla dibujito

Nusa Lembongan is one of the three islands that make up the Nusa Penida archipelago. This is the typical tourist destination for a full-day excursion from Bali. To get to this beautiful island, you have to take a boat. The journey takes approximately two hours.

A tourism boat company that operates this route is Scoot Cruise www.scootcruise.com. On this island, you will find natural beaches with calm bays, such as Jungutbatu Beach, an ideal place for scuba diving as it hosts a great marine life and areas for all skill levels.

Another place worth visiting on Nusa Lembongan is the beautiful Mushroom Bay, named after the mushroom corals that grow off the coast. This crescent-shaped bay can also boast a spectacular tropical landscape.

Nusa Ceningan

isla dibujito

The island of Nusa Ceningan is a hidden gem nestled among the stunning islands of Nusa Lembongan. This paradisiacal corner, located next to Nusa Lembongan and connected by a picturesque yellow bridge, promises a unique experience that combines captivating landscapes, thrilling adventures, and unparalleled serenity. Its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and relaxed atmosphere make it a favorite destination for those looking to escape the hustle and immerse themselves in tranquility.
